GS obtained his Ph.D. in Organofluorine Chemistry at Durham, under the supervision of Prof. R.D. Chambers. After a period as a postdoctoral research fellow in the laboratories of Prof. George Olah (USC), he transferred back to Durham. Following post-doctoral support from F2 Chemicals Ltd. (BNFL), he was awarded a Royal Society University Research Fellowship, which began in October 1996. He was appointed to a Lectureship in the Department of Chemistry at Durham (2001), Senior Lecturer (2004), Chair (2008) and Deputy Head Science Faculty (2012-15). He has published over 180 research papers, review articles and patent applications, mainly in the field of Organofluorine chemistry. In January 2018 he received the 2018 SCI Process Chemistry Award sponsored by GSK-AstraZeneca-Pfizer-Syngenta.
